Sickle Cell Society Ireland (SCSI) is the Official Umbrella organisation for all sickle cell support groups in Ireland. It is a patient and parent led NGO Organisation working at local, regional, national and European Union level.
The vision of SCSI is caring for people affected by sickle cell for better outcomes, through a just and inclusive society in which human values, dignity, respect, equal opportunity and mutual coexistence are guaranteed and respected.
Our Mission
The mission of SCSI is to promote seamless integration betwween the health and the education system and the community; promote paintents and public engagement via collaboration for responsive care; and promote justice, the social protection and intergration of people living with SCD and their immediate families.
Sickle Cell Society Ireland (SCSI) has been supporting parents of children with SCD on a one-on-one basis since 2006. In February 2013, with the support of Sickle Cell Society UK, SCSI was officially launched in Dublin. The organisation’s work focuses on Parent Support, Advocacy, working in Partnerships with local, international and EU level support services and creating awareness of SCD through educational workshops, conferences and seminars.
Sickle Cell Society Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland have taken the lead in Sickle Cell Education in Ireland with over 350 medical training Doctors each year learning from the experiences of patients and their family in a special symposium
Our awareness-raising initiatives have positively impacted thousands of individuals publicly, with a direct benefit to over 600 people who are attending sickle cell clinics in Ireland
Over €5,000 has been raised under the #SickleCellMatters campaign in Aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin
The Sickle Cell Society Ireland has visited over 30 schools, libraries, faith-based groups, community/voluntary organisations and hospitals in Dublin and reached out to about 2,500 individuals. In 2013, SCSI trained 18 individuals for the public awareness raising initiative. The project has created some level of awareness about sickle cell and its implications for the sufferers, families and the wider society.
The Sickle Cell Society Ireland supports families of patients with SCD through different projects, such as Parents Awareness Day which took place November 2012 and Easter Treat for family project, targeting all sick children in hospital in March 2013.
SCSI continuously engages in outreach campaigns towards achieving greater public awareness about sickle cell using flyers, videos, PowerPoint presentations; information workshops; posters, social media, SCSI website and factsheets as tools.
“The Sci-Fy Project” is a Youth Initiative of the Sickle Cell Society Ireland (SCSI) where young people affected by sickle cell become leaders and active agents of change in sickle cell awareness raising in Ireland, international and global levels.
SCSI involves some Academic and research institutions whose research/work contributes existing knowledge about sickle cell and the human rights of people affected by the condition, e.g. Worldwide Initiative on the Social Study of Haemoglobinopathies (WISSH); Unit for the Social Study of Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell at De Montfort University, UK; School of Applied Social Sciences, University College Dublin; School of Social Work and Social Policy, Trinity College Dublin; and Irish Royal College of Surgeons.
